Dr. Van Tilburg started writing at age 16, when he covered high school sports for a small rural newspaper. He went on to get a degree in science communication. He has written 11 books and hundreds of articles that include magazine articles, scientific journal articles, and general interest stories. He has written for Outside Online, Mens Journal, The Oregonian, Wilderness and Environemtal Medicine, Portland Monthly, and other publications. He has held numerous editorships for magazines, including Editor-in-Chief positions with Wilderness Medicine Magazine and Travel Medicine News.
Forthcoming from The Mountaineers Books is a third installment of his trilogy of mountain rescue stories from the oldest mountain rescue group in the nation, Hood River Crag Rats, based in Hood River, Oregon, USA.

Mountain Rescue Doctor: Wilderness Medicine in the Extremes of Nature, a memoir and collection of stories from a decade of mountain rescue, is available in paperback from St. Martins Press. It was a finalist for Oregon Book Awards and Banff Festival of Mountain Books.
